Meet Our Team
Columbia Cancer builds a team of medical and support experts around you, bringing you care that’s truly multidisciplinary and all in one place. Our experts specialize in head, neck, and oral cancer treatment and support. We coordinate your care to make it as simple as possible and to make sure you have smooth continuity of care during and after your treatment.
Your Care Team at Columbia Cancer
Your care team may include:
- Surgical oncologist, who specializes in cancer surgery and specifically operations in the delicate tissues of your mouth, throat, and sinuses.
- Medical oncologist, who diagnoses cancer and directs treatments such as chemotherapy, targeted therapy, and immunotherapy.
- Radiation oncologist, who uses radiation to precisely target cancer cells, causing them to be damaged and die.
- Oncologic dentist or oral oncologist, a specialist in early detection of oral cancer by thoroughly examining your mouth and taking tissue biopsy when needed.
- Pathologist, who examines tissue and fluid to look for changes in cells in order to classify a tumor’s stage and look for markers that will help your care team determine the best course of treatment for you.
- Reconstructive/plastic surgeon, who specializes in repairing damage caused by cancer surgery and treatment.
- Maxillofacial prosthodontist, who performs restorative surgery in the head and neck areas.
- Otolaryngologist, a doctor who specializes in the ear, nose, and throat.
- Oncology nurses and nurse practitioners, who provide hands-on medical and supportive care along your journey. Nurse navigators may also help you through specific processes, such as enrolling in a clinical trial.
- Palliative care specialists, who are experts in reducing symptoms like nausea and pain.
- Physical therapy and rehabilitation specialists, who help you regain function you might have lost due to surgery or treatment side effects.
- Speech-language pathologist (SLP), who specializes in communication and swallowing disorders. An SLP helps you regain your speaking, swallowing, and oral motor skills after cancer treatment that affects your head, mouth, and neck.
- Social workers, who can help you find resources in the community and provide emotional support.
- Integrative health practitioners, including reiki, massage, acupuncture, yoga therapy, meditation and more, to help you deal with the physical, mental, and emotional aspects of cancer treatment and survivorship.
- Nutritionists, to help you create and follow a plan that will support the healing your body must do during and after cancer treatment.
- Mental health counselors, to help you and your loved ones cope with cancer diagnosis, treatment, and survival.
- Spiritual practitioners, multifaith chaplains who can help with your religious, spiritual, and emotional needs and help you make decisions, participate in religious rituals, and more.
