Anal Cancer Signs and Symptoms

Anal cancer may develop slowly and cause no symptoms in its early stages. For many people, minor bleeding during a bowel movement is usually the first sign that something is wrong. Because these symptoms can resemble common conditions like hemorrhoids or fissures, they are often overlooked.

Still, it is important to pay attention to any new or continuing changes and talk to your doctor if you notice them. Finding anal cancer early greatly improves the chances of successful treatment.

What are the signs and symptoms of anal cancer?

Sometimes there are no clear symptoms of anal cancer, but rectal or anal bleeding is often usually the earliest sign. Other common symptoms may include:

  • Itching in or around the rectum or anus
  • Pain, soreness, or a feeling of fullness near the anus
  • A lump, mass, or growth at the anal opening
  • Abnormal discharge, such as mucus or pus, from the anus
  • Changes in bowel habits, such as narrow stools or needing to go more often

These symptoms can vary from person to person and may come and go over time. More often than not, many of these symptoms are caused by benign conditions like hemorrhoids, anal warts, or anal fissures. It is still important, however, to always be checked by a doctor if you experience any of these symptoms.

Signs to discuss with your doctor

Even if symptoms seem minor or are similar to hemorrhoids, it is best not to ignore them, especially if they don’t go away. Bleeding, pain, or new growths around the anus should always be evaluated by a healthcare provider.

Anal cancer can sometimes cause only mild or intermittent symptoms, so seeking care early helps rule out serious conditions and ensures timely treatment if cancer is found.
