Edmond M. Chan, MD
Internal Medicine
Overview
Dr. Edmond M. Chan is an Assistant Professor at Columbia University Irving Medical Center and a laboratory-based physician-scientist with a clinical focus on gastrointestinal malignancies. He earned his M.D. from the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine and is board certified in Medical Oncology and Internal Medicine. Dr. Chan is a member of the American Association for Cancer Research and the American Society of Clinical Oncology.
Dr. Chan’s research focuses on the genetic networks that drive oncogenesis and cancer cell survival, particularly in gastrointestinal cancers. He has identified several novel therapeutic targets, including the WRN RecQ helicase, which has emerged as a synthetic lethal target in microsatellite instability-high (MSI-H) cancers. His work on WRN has led to a phase I clinical trial investigating the WRN inhibitor HRO761 in patients with MSI-H cancers. Additionally, Dr. Chan's research explores vulnerabilities in ribosomal homeostasis and utilizes advanced functional genomic approaches, such as optical mapping of CRISPR screens, to study gene-environment interactions in cancer. His overarching goal is to uncover the mechanisms that sustain cancer cell survival and develop novel therapeutics based on these findings.
