Alissa Michel, MD

Overview
As an Assistant Professor of Medicine within the Division of Hematology/Oncology at Columbia University Irving Medical Center (CUIMC), Dr. Alissa M. Michel specializes in the care of patients with breast cancer as well as individuals at high-risk for breast cancer.
Dr. Michel received her Bachelor of Science in Psychology, graduating cum laude from Boston College, and received her medical degree from Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, where she was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha (AOA) Honor Medical Society. She completed both her Internal Medicine Residency and Hematology/Oncology fellowship at CUIMC, where she also served as Chief Fellow.
Her research, which directly informs her clinical care, focuses on improving cancer care delivery and advancing health equity, particularly in breast cancer prevention and genetic testing. She has been recognized with numerous honors, including the ASCO Young Investigator Award and the Susan G. Komen Career Transition Award, and has authored multiple peer-reviewed publications.
Dr. Michel’s passion for cancer care is deeply personal—her mother was diagnosed with breast cancer at a young age, an experience that shaped her compassionate, patient-centered approach. She views every patient as a valued member of the care team and collaborates closely with a network of specialists—including surgeons, radiation oncologists, nurses, social workers, nutritionists, and genetic counselors—to guide patients through every step of their journey with clarity, empathy and support.
