What is Leukemia?
Leukemia is a type of blood cancer that starts in the bone marrow. It happens when abnormal white blood cells grow out of control and make it harder for your body to fight infections, carry oxygen, and control bleeding. Some types of leukemia are more common than others and differ in how fast they progress. Acute leukemia is fast-growing, while chronic leukemia progresses more slowly and may be manageable over a longer period.
There are approximately 60,000 new cases of leukemia diagnosed in the United States each year. The four main types of leukemia are acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL), acute myeloid leukemia (AML), chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL), and chronic myeloid leukemia (CML).
